Краткий осмотр (реферат): У статті досліджено художнє бачення ландшафту в новелістиці Генрі Лоусона, засновника сучасної австралійської літератури. Творчість письменника та поета ще не висвітлювана в українському літературознавстві. Його проза відтворює національні риси австралійців та резонує з українською тематикою життя на землі та викликів фронтиру. Мета статті полягає у вивченні та інтерпретації художнього бачення ландшафту бушу в малій прозі Г. Лоусона. Здійснено аналіз концепту «буш» як природної зони, що сформувала відмінну від європейської національну ідентичність Австралії. На противагу романтизованій інтерпретації, Лоусон зображує буш як суворий, нестабільний простір, де панують самотність, божевілля та смерть. Він майстерно поєднує комізм і трагедію, фактичність та експресію, уникаючи моралізаторства. Акцентовано увагу на тому, що бушландшафт не тільки впливає на фізичне виживання, а й формує психологію персонажів, їхні цінності та уявлення про товариство та взаємодопомогу, що стали основою нового морального кодексу. У дослідженні підкреслена композиційна роль бушпейзажу в новелах. Хоча герої Лоусона стикаються з непереборними труднощами та поразками, їхній глибокий, часто ірраціональний зв’язок із цією землею перетворює топографічний простір на місце буття. Лоусон використовує «ландшафтний портрет», щоб відобразити вплив бушу на своїх персонажів, демонструючи їхню витримку та непередбачуваність, що є прямим віддзеркаленням навколишнього середовища. Всупереч уявленням про буш як про статичну та порожню місцевість, Лоусон зображує його як динамічний простір, що не тільки впливає на долі персонажів, але і є джерелом внутрішніх конфліктів та пошуків. Ключова «таємниця» бушу в Лоусона полягає в глибинному, часто ірраціональному зв’язку австралійців із цією землею, що змушує їх залишатися, попри всі випробування.; This article explores Henry Lawson’s artistic vision of the landscape in his short stories. Lawson, considered the founder of modern Australian literature, remains relatively underexplored in Ukrainian literary studies. Despite this, his prose, which captures the national traits of Australians through struggle and defeat, resonates with Ukrainian themes of life on the land and frontier challenges. Our research aims to examine and interpret Lawson’s artistic vision of the bush landscape in his short stories and its role in shaping a unique Australian identity. The study investigates Lawson’s portrayal of the “bush” concept, highlighting its role as a natural environment that fostered a unique national identity, distinct from its European antecedents. Countering romanticized interpretations, Lawson portrays the bush as a harsh, unstable space dominated by loneliness, madness, and death. He masterfully blends comedy and tragedy, factuality and expression, avoiding moralizing. The article also highlights how this harsh landscape not only influences physical survival but also shapes the characters’ psychology, values, and notions of mateship and mutual aid, forming the basis of a new moral code. The study emphasizes the compositional role of the bush landscape in Lawson’s stories, where it acts as an impartial arbiter of destinies. Although Lawson’s characters often face insurmountable difficulties and defeats, their deep, often irrational connection to this land transforms a topographical space into a true home, a place of being. We show how Lawson employs “landscape portraiture” to reflect the bush’s influence on his characters, demonstrating their resilience and unpredictability, directly mirroring the environment’s harshness. This realistic, often tragic, approach captured the actual national characteristics of Australians. Defying the notion of the bush as a static and barren landscape, Lawson depicts it as a dynamic environment that not only shapes the characters’ fates but also acts as a wellspring of inner turmoil and self-discovery. The central “enigma” of Lawson’s bush resides in the profound, often irrational bond Australians share with this land, compelling them to remain despite enduring numerous trials.</description>
